Plain, colored or stamped: what is each step up?
A plain patio runs $5–$8 per square foot, and each decorative step adds to that:
- Plain: $5–$8 per square foot, no decorative finish or color
- Simple design: $8–$11, one coloring method or decorative technique
- Custom design: $11–$18, two or three colors or contrasting work

Where will the water go?
A patio should move water away from the house and not turn a low part of the yard into a puddle, and regrading or drains show up in the price when a yard needs them. Neighbors count too: Arlington's permit rules say no deck or patio may send surface water onto the adjoining property. Ask the company to mark the slope direction on its sketch.
Does a patio need a permit?
It depends on the city and the height. In Arlington, an uncovered patio 30 inches or less above grade is on the list of work that needs no building permit for one- and two-family homes, with setback limits once it rises more than 12 inches (details on the Arlington page). Walkways and tired old patios
A stamped walkway runs $10–$14 per square foot and sometimes more, depending on the detail. If the old slab is sound, resurfacing costs less than replacement: patio resurfacing runs $3 to $10 per square foot.
